Each year, Sojourner House touches the lives of over 500 women and children in the Rochester community. Since 1982, Sojourner House has helped over 2,000 women build healthier, more joyful futures for themselves and their children.

The long-term success of Sojourner House families relies upon the foundation laid in its Transitional Housing Program, and the strong and sustained support families receive through its Supportive Housing and Outreach programs. This continuum of care approach recognizes the ongoing, daily struggles of Sojourner House women to maintain their sobriety, achieve education and employment goals, and keep their families together.

A place to begin…
Transitional Housing Program:

This 3 to 6 month program for women, many with children, in crisis is located in a former convent in the 19th Ward neighborhood of Rochester. It accommodates 16 women and their children.

The program provides:

  • A structured, community living environment that promotes healthy living habits as well as kinship among women facing similar challenges
  • Intensive case management and support for the whole family
  • Life skills education for the women through the Henrietta Hammond Institute for Life Skills (HHILS) Program
  • A children’s program, entitled Dreamseeds, that provides educational and enrichment opportunities

A place to grow and flourish…
Supportive Housing Program:

This program features 40 units of affordable housing located in three apartment complexes – Fairchild Place, Nancy Watson Dean Place, and Monica Place.

The program provides:

  • On-site case management
  • Referrals to area agencies
  • Family unification support
  • Monthly resident community meetings
  • Enrichment programs for children
  • Special events and holiday celebrations at Sojourner House

A support system to always count on…
Outreach Case Management:

In addition to the families helped through its two housing programs, Sojourner House serves over 100 families living within the community. Graduates of the Transitional Housing Program may enroll in its outreach program when they move back into the community.

This program provides:

  • Ongoing case management
  • Support services for as long as needed.
