It takes so much more than will power or a job to overcome homelessness and its causes. People need structure, training in basic life skills, therapy, professional and personal support. People need the space and time to heal, to rebuild self-esteem, and to experience small successes. The Sojourner House programs provide the structure for the small steps our clients need to take in order to achieve a better education and, ultimately, self-sustaining employment. This structure provides the framework within which foundations are laid and lives are rebuilt.
A place to grow and flourish…
In 1991, Sojourner House pioneered supportive housing in upstate New York with the opening of its Monica Place complex, the first supportive housing project of its kind in New York State. The Supportive Housing Network of New York honored Sojourner House with its Project of the Year Award for the Monica Place apartments in 2005.
Today, Sojourner House’s Supportive Housing Program operates three apartment complexes, Monica Place, Fairchild Place and Nancy Watson Dean Place, which provide 40 units of permanent supportive housing. The families residing in these apartments are graduates of our Transitional Housing Program, as well as those who have been referred from other social service agencies or by word-of-mouth.
The women living in Sojourner House Supportive Housing apartments strive every day toward their personal goals related to economic self-sufficiency, family stability, and maintaining their sobriety. Sojourner House’s Supportive Housing Program provides on-site case management, enforced accountability, including apartment inspections and drug testing and a sense of community with other families, as well special events and celebrations to help them thrive and create new lives for themselves. Many go on to earn college degrees and advance in their chosen career. Educational and enrichment opportunities for the children are available through our Dreamseeds Children’s Programs.

Supportive Suburban Housing Initiative
Permanent supportive apartments are provided by the Supportive Suburban Housing Initiative at Greece Commons (formerly Holyoke Apartments) in Greece, New York. Twenty-two apartments are designated for homeless families with disabilities who need case management and supportive services. Residents can stay as long as they need services and comply with program requirements, which include maintaining sobriety. The Family Services Coordinator assists clients to develop a personal plan, which includes training in life skills, to achieve stability and self-sufficiency. Sojourner House also offers programs for children, including tutoring, arts and cultural opportunities. The staff for this program is employed by Sojourner House at PathStone, while primary funding is provided by Tempro Development Corporation through a HUD grant. The property is managed by the Farash Corporation.
